Sisko lives! And here's how to keep track of his adventures

I'm an avid fan of the "Star Trek The Next Generation Companion," and this all-new volume examining what is arguably the best (certainly the most controversial) Trek series is must reading for anyone intrigued by the creation, scriptwriting and production of the series.
Each and every episode is covered in depth with a plot summary and detailed history "behind the scenes" of the episode's creation, writing, and filming. One of the reasons I enjoyed DS9 so much is the involved storyline of the series--the Dominion War--and having each of the episodes laid out in chronological order, with extensive detail on the structure of the storyline and subplots, helped me appreciate even more what Berman and Piller and company set out to do. It's filled with entertaining stories and nuggets of background information--how did they do they, where did they get the idea for that, what worked (and didn't)...it's ideal for the Star Trek fan as well as anyone interested in television writing and production.
I don't entirely agree with some of the previous review comments: understand that a book like this takes time to write and create, not to mention publish, have sales reps advance into bookstores, and print and ship. I work in publishing, and with very few exceptions, publishing books takes a *long* lead time. There's no way this could have been ready (or as complete) if it were issued last year. I'd also say, again as someone working inside publishing, that adding color photographs and a hardback binding, while nice, would dramatically increase the price of the book, probably to forty dollars or above.
The very best compliment I can give a book like is that it makes me want to go back to the original source again. If you're a Trek fan, I dare you to pick this up and not get totally involved in it, and *then* want to dig out your tapes and rewatch all your favorite episodes...and even a few that this book will give you a brand new appreciation for.

A dream come true for the DS9 fan!

This amazing book is an absolute must-have for the hardcore fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine... if you are like me and savored every episode over all seven seasons, you will appreciate the author's in-depth coverage, behind-the-scenes info on every episode, and his obvious affection for the show. This book is over 700 pages and filled with new photos & illustrations I have never seen anywhere else, including really nifty things like production drawings, some hilarious props, and even a map of Bajor. The many interviews with the cast & creators alone are worth the price. If hearing "The Way You Look Tonight" makes you misty, buy this book!

Liss's first novel, A Conspiracy of Paper, was sketched on the wide canvas of 18th-century London's multilayered society. While he wants to retain his standing in the Jewish community, he finds it increasingly difficult to abide by the draconian dictates of the Ma'amad, the ruling council. Which is all the more reason not to acknowledge his longing for his brother's wife, with whom he now lives, having lost all his money in the sugar trade. Miguel is delighted when a sexy Dutch widow enlists him as partner in a secret scheme to make a killing on "coffee fruit," an exotic bean little known to Europeans in 1659. But she may not be as altruistic as she seems. Once a successful commodities broker, Miguel is down on his luck until he tastes a strange foreign beverage called coffee and decides that the lowly bean is the key to regaining his fortunes. Miguel's convoluted and illegal plan for importing coffee leads to entanglements with enemies old and new and to a relationship with his brother's wife, an independent woman trapped in a restrictive culture. An elegantly written historical fiancial thriller - with lots of java!

Edgar Award-winning author Edward Liss returns with "The Coffee Trader," another elegantly written historical suspense thriller. In 1659 the bustling port town of Amsterdam was filled with refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, as well as schemers and rogues from all over Europe looking to make some gulden (guilder). The Dutch, after defeating the Spanish, turned their small country into a major economic power in Europe. Amsterdam became the most financially dynamic city in the world, thanks to the robust commercial activity of their commodities exchange, the world's first.

Miguel Lienzo, a Portuguese Jew, escaped the Inquisition on the Iberian peninsula and moved to the much more tolerant Netherlands. He created a home within the city's close-knit Sephardic Jewish community. Sharp-witted, and a bit of a rogue himself, Miguel thrives on the exhilaration of the Dutch bourse, but his trades of late have not gone well. On the brink of financial ruin due to sudden shifts in the sugar market, he enters into a partnership with a seductive, entrepreneurial Dutch widow with an eye for business, Geertruid Damuis. Together they concoct a daring plot to corner the market on a new commodity - coffee. Lienzo's plan has him going up against a powerful enemy, Solomon Parido, who sits on the Ma'amad, the Jewish self-governing body which controls all aspects of community life. Miguel had been betrothed to Parido's daughter, until his unfortunate lack of discretion caused the relationship to end, earning him Parido's lasting enmity. If Lienzo fails, he will not only be ruined but exiled as well...and nothing would please Parido more.

Liss meticulously recreates the 17th century Dutch city. He brings Lienzo's world to life in great detail, as well as the workings of the Amsterdam bourse which are strangely similar to modern commodities markets. The complex, labyrinthine storyline, chock full of intrigue, is really compelling, and his characters are three dimensional in scope. Miguel, actually, is a surprisingly nuanced figure.

I found myself drinking more coffee than usual while reading this novel. Something about the narrative had me smelling freshly ground coffee beans constantly. Imagine a world without Starbucks! One part of "The Coffee Trader" that I really enjoyed, amongst many, is the Europeans' astonished reaction after their first taste of this bitter, stimulating brew, and their realization that fortunes could be made with the beverage. Lienzo even foresees a day when taverns, serving coffee, will spring up on every corner. Imagine that?

interesting topic, great ending, frustrating development

i found the book difficult to read, interesting but difficult. i felt the main character kept cycling through euphoria (i'm rich), depression (i'm poor), recommitment ... and everyone went from friend, to foe, to unknown, to friend, ...

at my book club i said i thought it was not a very good book, but it would make a great movie. the last fourth of the book has so many twists and turns. the book, for me, created a dislike for the main character with shifting feelings rather than building tension that the ending deserved.

Outstanding!

Easy to follow step-by-step directions. Does not get much into advanced topics but it should suffice for most as a refresher. However, the quality of printing/typesetting could use some improvement as most of the figures look washed out and there is no printing contrast in the code examples. If this issue were not present, I would have given a 5-star rating. So, 5-stars to the author but less star for publisher/printer quality.

As someone wanting to learn more about VBA, it would be hard to top this book for its easy to follow get right to it and do it examples. The author Tom Urtis has done a better job at explaining with a to the point approach. I found the book motivating - wanting me to learn more. There is also a DVD with chapter lessons for those who find a visual approach more user friendly, or as a supplement. Great for someone new to VBA, or someone like me looking for a refresher.

I had no issues with the printing or graphics, so 5 stars.

If you want to learn VBA quickly, I strongly recommend this book.

Great book

I bought this book to try to switch some of my data crunching from Python back to Excel, and learn a bit more "Macro-fu". This book is great, and it made the learning curve quite flat. The examples are pretty good and easy to follow, however they are over-commented, making the actual code difficult to decipher in places. I would recommend this for anyone who is looking for a quick introduction to VBA for Excel, and who already has a pretty good understanding of the underlying Excel functions.

A contagious passion for worship

"The natural object is always the adequate symbol." Joyce Rupp embodies Ezra Pound's famous quote by using diverse images as springboards for spiritual transformation; in elevating the ordinary, she reveals an extraordinary God.

These meditations and seasonal reflections include prayers of all kinds: from call and response to blessings to holy day invocations. Drawn from her years as a spiritual director and retreat leader, her work gives voice to our common losses and aspirations, our longings and celebrations. Forthright poems emulate traditional religious poetry, and her prose is direct, insightful, and heartfelt.

This is one generous soul. "Use the rituals and prayers as seeds or as whole plants," she writes. "Either way is fine with me." She requests that her poems be preserved intact but graciously offers the other materials in her book -- including the music -- for adaptation for personal or liturgical use. The user need only include the appropriate acknowledgement, as explained in her introduction.

This book is useless. Why? It only gives answer but no explanation. What is the value of buying but not able to explain to your child how to get to the correct answer? Utterly pointless and waste of your hard earn money; To say nothing of wasting your child's time doing the question but no able to find his/her way to the correct answer.
