This book covers a wide range of nootropic drugs and supplements in an alphabetical format that's easy to understand and follow. Each entry just covers a page or two of information regarding treatment options, dosages (where available) and clinical studies (if any). The entries contain important information on side effects, making this a very useful resource for people who are interested in brain enhancing options. This isn't a topic that the typical family doctor knows much about. As such, it's a good resource if you are interested in getting better mental performance in a safe manner.

Thomas Sankara, often called the African Che Guevara, was president of Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in Africa, until his assassination during the military coup that brought down his government. Although his tenure in office was relatively short, Sankara left an indelible mark on his country’s history and development. An avowed Marxist, he outspokenly asserted his country’s independence from France and other Western powers while at the same time seeking to build a genuine pan-African unity.

Ernest Harsch traces Sankara’s life from his student days to his recruitment into the military, early political awakening, and increasing dismay with his country’s extreme poverty and political corruption. As he rose to higher leadership positions, he used those offices to mobilize people for change and to counter the influence of the old, corrupt elites. Sankara and his colleagues initiated economic and social policies that shifted away from dependence on foreign aid and toward a greater use of the country’s own resources to build schools, health clinics, and public works. Although Sankara’s sweeping vision and practical reforms won him admirers both in Burkina Faso and across Africa, a combination of domestic opposition groups and factions within his own government and the army finally led to his assassination in 1987.

This is the first English-language book to tell the story of Sankara’s life and struggles, drawing on the author’s extensive firsthand research and reporting on Burkina Faso, including interviews with the late leader. Decades after his death, Sankara remains an inspiration to young people throughout Africa for his integrity, idealism, and dedication to independence and self-determination.

Ernest Harsch is a research scholar at the Institute of African Studies at Columbia University. He worked on African issues at the United Nations for more than twenty years and is the author of South Africa: White Rule, Black Revolt.

A contribution to the discussion around the Burkina Faso Revolution of 1983-87

Full disclosure: I knew Ernie Harsch years ago as a very talented socialist journalist. He's very knowledgeable about Africa, and spoke to Thomas Sankara several times. The interview he did for Intercontinental Press, a magazine that no longer exists, but was then a sister publication of The Militant, is in the major collection of Sankara's writings Thomas Sankara Speaks: The Burkina Faso Revolution 1983?87 2nd (second) Edition by Thomas Sankara published by Pathfinder Press (2007), also available in French.

This book comes out just after the overthrow of the Blaise Compaoré government. It starts out as a biography of Sankara, but soon becomes a look at the revolutionary government; its accomplishments and shortcomings. To some extent this is inevitable; Sankara's life became virtually indistinguishable from the revolution. The parts where Harsch takes up the governmental structures has a somewhat abstract quality. He writes that "The absence of elections--except with the framework of the obviously partisan CDRs [Committees for the Defense of the Revolution]--was later seen as one of the Sankara government's major shortcomings, even by most of those who continued to follow his ideas. Despite the rhetoric of people's participation, there were insufficient channels through which popular ideas and grievances could be transmitted upward." This last sentence may be true, but it doesn't necessarily follow that elections were the answer. Elections to what kind of body? In the absence of any kind of workers party, elections in the US consist in picking who will best represent the exploiters.

His analysis of the economic measures of the revolutionary government is extremely concrete, and quite useful. One can see what worked and what didn't. One of the strengths of Sankara and other leaders was their ability to rapidly change course if a measure that had sounded good turned out to be counterproductive, as was the policy Harsch documents of measures to try and keep cattle away from crops. The book provides economic data on the revolution's accomplishments.

Sankara was always more for having the masses of toilers solve problems than for using repression, and he moved even further in this framework as time went on. Harsch outlines the moves made to liberate women and to involve them more and more in the revolutionary process, and he outlines the government's revolutionary foreign policy. His comments on who, besides Blaise Compaoré and his wife may have been involved in the killing of Sankara and the overthrow of the revolution are useful, but inconclusive. His point about the thinness of the really outstanding revolutionary leadership is of course true, but only deepening the revolution and increasing the level of education of the masses could have solved this problem. As it turned out, the time for that didn't exist.

But Sankara left a great legacy. His ability to inspire the oppressed has not ended with his death, but continues through the wider and wider distribution of his speeches, translated into more and more languages. Sankara was able to apply Marxist principles to a country with hardly any working class; where the largest part of the population was involved in subsistence agriculture. In the process he set an example and advanced ideas that can be followed even in the imperialist countries.

In addition to Thomas Sankara Speaks, there are two smaller books with selections from it. One is Women's Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle, and the other is We Are the Heirs of the World's Revolutions: Speeches from the Burkina Faso Revolution 1983-87, 2nd Edition. These are both available in English, French, Spanish, and Farsi. We can be sure the number of languages will increase. Sankara's speeches remain the best introduction to Sankara and the Burkina Faso Revolution.

For understanding the impact of imperialism in Africa I recommend How Europe Underdeveloped Africa. But to see how despite the economic distortions of imperialism the working class continues to grow, see Capitalism and the Transformation of Africa.

Sankara correctly saw the huge importance of the revolutionary movement in South Africa, and the world struggle against apartheid. For a fuller understanding of this I recommend The Coming Revolution in South Africa (New International no. 5), The Struggle Is My Life, and Nelson Mandela Speaks: Forging a Democratic, Nonracial South Africa.

I have just returned from a talk given by the author, and I wanted to add something. Ernest Harsch's analysis of those directly involved in the coup and assassination of Sankara, as well as of what forces stood to benefit from it is quite valuable. Some of the small Stalinist groups backed Campaoré, but he very rapidly dropped his revolutionary rhetoric to gain the support of imperialism and of reactionary African regimes. Even if evidence is found of direct imperialist involvement (France would be the most likely country), it would not change the responsibility of those who carried out an action that benefited imperialism regardless of whether an imperialist government was directly involved or not.

Nice to Finally Read About Sankara

This was a good read. It's impossible to find anything on Sankara, other than speeches, in English. I only wish there had been more information. I felt as though somehow, something was missing from the story, maybe a little more on his rise, a little more on the Christmas War, more on his time in power. It brushed in broad strokes.
But, until I brush up on my French, or someone does a more comprehensive English-language bio, I am satisfied with broad strokes.

As a Berlin social reporter in the years leading up to WWII, Bella Fromm mingled with some of the most important and influential members of Hitler's rising Third Reich. Given the Nazis' appreciation for propaganda, this fact alone would be unremarkable, but her writings take on special interest when coupled with the knowledge that she received such access while openly proclaiming her own Jewish background and anti-Nazi sympathies. As she dutifully reported on the countless dinners, galas, and cultural events attended by German high society, Fromm also kept a secret diary that chronicled the seemingly inexplicable growth and horrifying consequences of National Socialism: "It's not curious that all this is beginning to make me feel like a stranger in my own country, that I am beginning to be aware of a feeling of hostility...."

Fearing for her life, Fromm fled Germany in 1938, smuggling her incriminating diary out in separate parcels before she left. First published in 1943, these recollections wear the patina of an Allied effort at public relations, but the prescient accuracy of her dire predictions is intriguing nonetheless. And, while invariably placing herself in the shining glow of absolute moral and ethical integrity, her insightful observations offer an interesting record of the many actions--both heroic and cowardly--she witnessed during this particularly ugly period of mass hysteria. --George Laney

But Is It True?

A good read, but there is controversy over whether she actually wrote this as a diary at the time these events occurred or whether she wrote the "diary" in the US years after the fact and based the book on her memory and on events she later read in the press. Apparently, some of her dates are erroneous but match the dates printed in newspaper articles. Did her close friend in Nazi circles actually exist? To my knowledge, he has not been identified. In retrospect, it's not clear how the diary was smuggled out if it were, indeed, smuggled out. But it's a fascinating read, and Bella Fromm did travel in high political circles. Eric Larsen mentions her in his book "In the Garden of Beasts." Read it and take it with a grain of salt.

otherworldly

imagine a fashion reporter being in the middle of the nazi takeover.
its like 'sex and the city' crossed with a horror movie.

what can i say. a gossip hound who instead of reporting on
stars and celebrities and politicians... revealing their foibles, she instead gives us the gossip on the nazi leaders.
the hypocrisy of their attitudes and philosophy, stands out
like green on yellow. if jon stewart had something to say
about the nazis he might have pointed out the things that
Bella did.

for example, she describes over and over the nazis ability
to appreciate art, but they just dont seem to get it.
they like the look of it, the feeling of being there, but
it doesnt raise anything in them... or does it?
one time, hitler is watching a performance, and he says
'this fellow is wonderful, pity he is a jew'. doesnt
he have jews working for him?

the strangest thing is when she meets hitler. he compliments
her, and she secretly wonders what hed think if only he knew.

she observes these people, goering,
hitler himself, the way youd find ordinary people described
in other books. hitler and the others are not towering figures
they are not titans of anything, she cuts them down
with a few comments about their demeanor or their social
skills, or lack thereof.

the experience of a german citizen , relatively well off,
watching the nazis slowly take over, watching her world
slowly sour and rot around her, is amazing...
there is nothing abstract about the take over, no dates
and facts dryly presented as a history book.

no instead one of the young men workers at her office
gets caught up in the propaganda, joins the SS, and ends
up being murdered because he talked too much about
what they were doing, the evil of their tactics.

imagine the silliest american drama/comedy set in the editorial
offices of the socialite section of a newspaper, then
throw in the take over by the nazis, people disappearing,
and our hero, a normal writer, an unassuming reporter...

her acts of defiance are to help dozens of people escape
by using her social and political connections. and eventually
she has to escape herself, complete with nazi assasins on
her tail, where she finds a new life in america,
starting at the bottom of the economic ladder and trying
to work her way back to normalcy.

i only wish there were a movie of it.

note: i have also read a journal article challenging
one of the facts of the book, IE implying that she may
have made some things up. i can believe it... the story
does have parts that are almost too good to be true.
but if one reconsidered the book entire as a fictional work, then
it would stand by itself as a good work of art, in my humble opinion.

John gives his best to us again! He's a teacher that has blessed me personally and professionally. I heard John teach on this live in February 2012 with the John Maxwell Team and he was like a little kid in a candy store, filled with passion and excitement. He believes what he writes and he lives what he believes. The book is just as good as John live.

Is the book simple? You bet. Is it difficult to apply. Of course. But, the framework of the 15 Laws is one model that will help you be more successful in every area of your life. Truly, we cannot lead anyone further than we've led ourselves and this book will give you the tools to lead yourself to your next level.

1. Law of Intentionality - Growth doesn't just happen.

Blown Away, Again.

I've been fortunate to read this book and participate in lessons taught by John Maxwell. This more than any other Maxwell book has touched me more deeply and passionately than all his other work and all his other work is superb.

John is always masterful at connecting with what is "real" in people and getting down to the nitty gritty in a compelling and engaging way. The difference with this book is that it gets to the 'how' of discovering one's purpose. I have met hundreds of people who when asked, What is your purpose, can never answer. They simply don't know. In very short order The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth dives into discovering the core of ones purpose in life.

Here is what I know. Another great book on "Purpose" answers the question. John invites the reader to discover for themselves. Like 4th grade mathematics, the answer isn't as critical as the journey itself. Along the way of discovery we find so much about ourselves, who we are and why we act the way we do, and then, with intention, we begin to paint the art of passion on the canvas of our life.

About the Author
Mario Markus, Professor Emeritus at the University of Dortmund, Germany, was born in Santiago de Chile, where he lived for twenty years, except for one year as an exchange student in Oklahoma. He studied Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, where he earned his PhD in 1973. Later on he became a research group leader at the Max-Planck-Institute in Dortmund. He has published more than 160 scientific articles in international journals about self- organization and chaos in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. His first poetry book, Poemas de Invierno appeared 1990 in Madrid. In 2005 he won a contest through the Chilean Department of State to produce an audio book containing his translations of Chilean poetry into German. His science-fiction novel Bilis Negra (2001) was converted into a successful comic. Markus' book Charts for Prediction and Chance (2007) features software for drawing surrealistic pictures using mathematical formulae. Pictures obtained in this way were shown in exhibitions in several countries, including the USA, the UK and Germany. CHEMICAL POEMS - ONE ON EACH ELEMENT (Dos Madres Press, 2013) is his latest book.

I draw attention to Professor Mario Markus’s book “Chemical Poems – One on Each Element”, published by Dos Madres Press, 2013 (ISBN 978-1-933675-98-5) in English. Markus has a multidisciplinary background and although retired as a physicist he maintains a position at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, Germany. He appears to have ventured into poetry as he had earlier in art exploring human nature. I quote from his publisher: “Markus shows poets that chemistry provides valuable lyrical material, which has rarely been used. On the other hand, the chemistry students can be made aware of the beauty of poetry”. The poems appear in sequence of Atomic Number accompanied by a facing page on the chemistry of the element. In the art world Markus was one of the leaders of the “fractalist” movement and has produced some startling art works based on Chaos Theory.

So cute and romantic!!

Despite the fact that this book is about hockey and ice, it was a perfect summer read. This story captured me from the first page. I breezed through it so quickly, I was enjoying it so much! It's just a cute, romantic story with great characters and a simple conflict. Sometimes these are the best books you can find.

I loved Tyler from the beginning. This is a guy who is a huge deal in this little town he's living in. It's a hockey town in Canada where the populace pretty much worships hockey. Tyler, being one of the best, is sought after and idolized by the young and old alike. He's been something of a player, but has grown tired of that. His life is changing at this point, as he's not liking the direction both his dad and agent want for him. I loved this conflict he has within himself on whether or not he can find the voice to stand up and say that what he wants isn't necessarily what everyone else wants from him.

Karen captured me from the first word. She's unconventional in the sense that her circumstances have created more than a little bitterness within her. She's snarky, and standoffish with her family, somewhat understandably. It is so sweet to watch Tyler draw her out and soften her edges. The two of them together were such a great compliment to the other.

The conflicts in the story were deeply emotional, and I loved watching the two of them work through these issues. The author did a wonderful job with characterization, making me love her characters and care about their choices and where they would go from here. The writing had some sweet moments, some romantic ones, some angsty ones.... pretty much everything that fits together to make a great book for me. I loved it! And yes, there is another book to this, even though this one stands alone. So I'm really looking forward to the next book! Great read.

Excellent series start!

I absolutely loved this book! It's funny, touching, feel-good, and real. Plus, hockey. Really, I'm not sure what else is needed. ;)

Karen never knew her dad--until her mother died from complications after a car accident. Now she's living with him and his wife, along with her three half-siblings. It's far from an ideal situation--her twin half brother and sister are only a few months older than she is (yeah, that math took me a few minutes to grasp--silly me, always trying to think the best of everyone) and on top of grieving for her mother, Karen feels like she's created a big ol' blot on their perfect existence. The only thing that gets her out of the suckfest that currently is her life is her daily run.

Until she gets attacked by a crazed squirrel...

Tyler's billeting with a local family for his third year, playing hockey for an OHL team, (hopefully--maybe) one step away from the NHL. His unemployed father is more than a little over-involved with his hockey career, and together with his agent they're putting all kinds of pressure on the almost-eighteen-year-old. He runs every morning to quiet the voices in his head.

Until the day he rescues a reluctant damsel in distress from an overexcited rodent...

Karen's dad is notorious in their small town for his infidelity. Tyler's got his own reputation as a love-them-and-leave-them kind of guy. He says he's ready for a change, but can Karen trust him? Do either of them have time for a real relationship anyway, with everything else that is going on in their lives?

This book made me laugh, cry, and gasp out loud in a "no he/she didn't" kind of way over and over again. I loved both Karen and Tyler, and wanted nothing more than to get them to an HEA. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series, just to get to see them again.

Great book! can’t wait for the next book in the Corrigan Falls Raiders series.

Center Ice is the first book in the Corrigan Falls Raiders series, a new young adult (possibly new adult in future books) contemporary romance series about a Major-minor league hockey team. It is told in dual narrative between Tyler and Karen. I really enjoyed that because I have been reading more paranormal books lately and I have to say I have missed my dual narrative contemporary romances. And I didn’t even realize that I missed them until I started reading Center Ice.

One of the great things about Center Ice…other than the Hockey players…is that the characters are so completely read. You are going to see the good, the bad and the ugly from Karen and even Tyler. They are both great, but Karen especially found herself in a less than desirable situation, and she is a 16 year old girl. So she sometimes had a tendency to let her snarky and bratty side show. Not that I really blamed her though. I think having to go live with the father you never knew- after the death of your mother- and to find out that he has a whole family and he was cheating on his pregnant wife, which resulted in knocking Karen’s mother up with her. Yes, that is not the typical situation and it is bound to be more than a little awkward. Yes, the kids are going to resent you and the mother has every right to be a total witch. And the oldest daughter was a total witch, but the mom really surprised me. I kind of wish Karen had been a little nicer to her initially because she was surprisingly great about the whole thing. I kind of loved that even though she had every right to be cold and distant towards Karen, she wasn’t mean at all. It was refreshing.

Karen is only 16, so she does have some growing up to do, but this is such a tough time for her that you have to cut her some slack. And then there is Tyler. Tyler is so worthy of being a hometown hero. I just loved him. I felt so bad for him. In some ways I felt worse for him than for Karen. I know that sounds strange because Karen lost her mom, but Tyler has parents alive, but not there for him. They don’t seem to care about what he wants, only what they want for him. It was tough for me to read some of the scenes with Tyler and his dad, but I lived for the scenes between Tyler and Karen. I just loved the two of them together. And I loved that Karen wasn’t that into hockey. The scene were she found out Tyler was a hockey player cracked me up.

Overall, Center Ice is a great book. It is funny, sweet, heartbreaking, and an all around wonderful read. I loved getting to know all of the characters, and I loved that Cate Cameron wasn’t afraid to show some ugly sides to them. This is how they were and this is how you were going to see them. No punches barred. If you are a fan of young adult/new adult contemporary that is realistic and not falsely fluffed up, I would strongly recommend Center Ice. I can’t wait for the next book in the Corrigan Falls Raiders series.
