Very satisfying
By Jerry Kurjian
Walsh's `Antibiotics' is a great introduction to the major classes of antibiotics and how each works, or doesn't, against cells, including not only bacteria but fungi and cancer cells. Each class of antibiotic is described, with step-by-step explanations of the chemical mechanics of the antibiotic on its target. The author discusses the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and what steps are being taken, in terms of new drug development and new schemes for existing drug use, to overcome this problem.
This was a very satisfying read. The information is dense but the author's style is reader-friendly and concise. The text is supported by many illustrations of the mechanics being described and these illustrations are detailed and explicit. I wanted an up-to-date, fairly technical book about antibiotic function and this book fit the bill better than I could have hoped. I look forward to going back to Walsh's book again for an even better understanding.

detailed book from leader in the field
By troglodyte
Legendary among natural product chemists, Christopher Walsh takes us through the detailed mechanisms of the biosynthetic pathways which common classes of antibiotics target. This is a valuable reference book because it allows us to see why antibiotics work on an atom-by-atom basis--something which most microbiology texts are incapable of doing. A strong background in organic chemistry is required to really understand the mechanisms outlined in the text, but coupled with an undergraduate organic textbook, this book is superior introduction to the overlapping worlds of medicinal, organic, and biosynthetic chemistry.

Christopher Walsh is a great chemist and a great writer alike
By Michael Ellenberger
Christopher Walsh is a great chemist and a great writer alike; Dr. Timothy Wencewicz was also my favorite professor, and he collaborated on it. Really made me appreciate antibiotic chemistry.

Morbus Gravis 2: Druuna, by Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri

During the thirteen years of publication of Druuna's adventures in Morbus Gravis, the plot has evolved through several stages, differentiated with numerous jumps in the storyline, with some attendant inconsistencies. In the first volumes in the series, the action unfolds is a place called The City, a futuristic but degraded urban environment. Humans live in a cramped, hostile, and decadent society, controlled by a religious oligarchy based on the knowledge of "Truth." In this society, books are banned and power is exercised by a corrupt and despotic militarized bureaucracy. Although never clearly stated, this current era, known as the "Age of Man", is presumed to be the aftermath of a kind of war. As told by the priests, Evil had been visited on the populace by an incurable, infectious disease that transforms people in a progressive and rapid fashion into amorphous, tentacled mutants. As a precautionary measure, all of the City's inhabitants are forcibly injected with a serum periodically distributed in overcrowded health facilities. Many believe that those found to be "healthy" will be sent to the City's upper levels, a place inaccessible to the majority but where those selected enjoy a better life free from want and hardship. Similarly, those infected with "Evil" are sent to the lower levels. Druuna and her lover Shastar exist in this environment. After a series of adventures, Druuna discover that the City is actually a giant spaceship which left Earth after an unspecified cataclysm and has drifted through space for centuries. At some point, Lewis, the ship's captain, delegated control to the computer Delta, which is responsible for creating the current state of affairs. (The Priests are actually androids operated by Delta.) Delta transformed Lewis into an immortal being, using organic parts from the healthy people who had been admitted to the upper levels of the City.

Punk Rock: So What?: The Cultural Legacy of PunkFrom Routledge

It's now over twenty years since punk pogo-ed its way into our consciousness. Punk Rock So What?brings together a new generation of academics, writers and journalists to provide the first comprehensive assessment of punk and its place in popular music history, culture and myth. The contributors, who include Suzanne Moore, Lucy OBrien, Andy Medhurst, Mark Sinker and Paul Cobley, challenge standard views of punk prevalent since the 1970s. They:
* re-situate punk in its historical context, analysing the possible origins of punk in the New York art scene and Manchester clubs as well as in Malcolm McClarens brain
* question whether punk deserves its reputation as an anti-fascist, anti-sexist movement which opened up opportunities for women musicians and fans alike.
* trace punks long-lasting influence on comics, literature, art and cinema as well as music and fashion, from films such as Sid and Nancy and The Great Rock n Roll Swindle to work by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Sarah Lucas.
* discuss the role played by such key figures as Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell, Malcolm McClaren, Mark E. Smith and Viv Albertine.
Punk Rock Revisited kicks over the statues of many established beliefs about the meaning of punk, concluding that, if anything, punk was more culturally significant than anybody has yet suggested, but perhaps for different reasons.

Review
"["Punk Rock: So Waht?] makes the case for why we should still care...A must for those of the old-school punk persuasion and an intriguing, if not moving, read for those more inclined to regard punk rock with a 'So what?'...A solid background in punk history."
-"Billboard Magazine
""Punk Rock: So What? provides a substantive take on issues like punk etiquette, punk fashion, the influence of punk on comics, punk and racism and punk nostalgia. Sabin has commissioned younger writers, all of whom were involved in punk's heyday, if only as fans."
-Publisher's Weekly, July, 1999

A little too pedantic for punk.
By C. Burkhalter
There is one fantastic essay in this collection, "'I won't let that dago by:' Rethinking punk and racism," by Roger Sabin. Its totally great, and I think its mandatory reading for anyone interested in punk. Other than that essay though....
Well, I picked this book up from the library hoping to get a little more context for the 1970s UK punk scene. Listening to Gang of Four, Sham 69, and Stiff Little Fingers day after day, I wanted some specifics. I wanted Margaret Thatcher horror stories and shocking welfare statistics. This book really doesn't do that. Furthermore, it kinda reads like a bunch of professors waxing nostalgiac about listening to the Rezillos and buying bondage pants. I'd have been better served re-reading the liner notes to Crass's "Best Before." This book might be a good resource if you're writing a paper on punk, but its not much use for someone with a general interest, and it doesn't touch much at all on social or political issues, which to me seem crucial to UK punk. But do check out that Sabin essay!

Uneven but interesting ideas
By Dogrrrl
A collection of essays, primarily about the British scene. The writing is very uneven, which gets in the way of some interesting ideas. In particular I appreciate the inclusion of essays on gender and race, as these issues are usually glossed over in books on punk. I also liked to essay on regional British punk in contrast to London, and the influences of surf & garage music and comix on American punk. These would be best as starting points for discussion, as each is fairly short, and has shortcomings.

Nick Knox was in The Cramps, not The Vibrators...
By A Customer
When I first found this book I was suspicious, expecting a disaster of misunderstanding and pedantic musings that miss the point (and soul) of the vital underground/independent rock music of the mid to late 1970's. I myself have problems with the label 'punk', a term I'm old enough to associate with 1960's 'garage rock'. In the liner notes he wrote for the classic 1972 'Nuggets' compilation of garage and pop peculiarities, Lenny Kaye used the term 'punk' to describe the sounds and mindset of those 1960's gems. Academics and journalists engaging rock music always has its risks (Greil Marcus' pretentious 'Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century', for example, which gets some well-deserved criticism in the chapter I'm about to recommend).
But I bought 'Punk Rock: So What?' for a great a chapter that REALLY gets it right; 'Chewing out a rhthym on my bubble-gum: The teenage aesthetic and geneologies of American punk', by Bill Osgerby. He explores among other things the connections between bubble gum, the Monkees, and the Ramones, sidesteps any pretentious musings, and provides useful insights. The book is worth it for those valuable insights into the connections and influences of some great, inspired and timeless music.
By the way, drummer Nick Knox was a member of The Cramps, not The Vibrators, as mistakenly written on page 206, in a chapter by someone else. The name of the singer/guitarist in The Vibrators was simply 'Knox'; one word only. I saw The Vibrators, the original Ramones, and others in that halcyon year of 1977, and The Cramps some years after that. And bless ya, Nick, wherever you are. Thanks for your contribution to some brilliant and timeless music.
Oh, uh, pardon my momentary stroll down memory lane. This book will help to capture some of the essence of that essential 'cute noise' (Marc Bolan's description of mid seventies 'punk' rock) and its surrounding aesthetics.

Rude Behavior, by Dan Jenkins

The good-ole-boy heroes of Dan Jenkins' Semi-Tough and Life Its Ownself are back in this exuberant tale of football and other excesses. Rude Behavior finds Billy Clyde Puckett, former New York Giant football god and later television announcer, as general manager and part-owner of a new NFL team, the West Texas Tornadoes. His old drinking partner-in-crime and favorite receiver, Shake Tiller, has written a bestselling book, The Average Man's History of the World, and his nearly perfect wife, Barbara Jane, is in Hollywood, making a movie with Shake, who happens to be her old flame. Meanwhile, Billy Clyde's father-in-law, Big Ed Bookman, who is more Texas than oil and is majority owner of the Tornadoes, is trying to lure the old Giants coach, T.J. Lambert, to run his new team. And Billy Clyde has met a bartender named Kelly Sue Woodley, a wiseass beauty who works at a joint called "He Ain't Here" and causes some major marital discord.

All these folks are back to take part in some serious fun, which in Jenkinsland means football, plenty of "young scotches," athletic exploits on the field and in the bedroom, a lot of riffs about the stupidity of "gubmint reg-you-layshuns," and the sublime beauty of country music. Hilarious, stubbornly retrograde, and laced with affection for everything Texas football stands for, Rude Behavior is vintage Dan Jenkins.

Amazon.com Review
From beginning to end, Rude Behavior is deliciously true to its title. Not for the easily offended or the purveyors of PC, it forms the third installment in Jenkins's continuing saga of Billy Clyde Puckett, first introduced in Semi-Tough as a star running back whose attitude matched his twinkle-toed unpredictability on and off the field. Now, some two decades later, Billy Clyde's feet may have slowed, but his mouth and his passions haven't. He still loves the game; he's just sick of the way it's gotten soft: "Pass interference (used to be) when you broke a guy's ribs. Today it's excess frowning." His plan is to heal it. He's decided to turn his back on the clichés that have sustained his life as a broadcaster for "something more important than Hamlet": he will start his own NFL team, the expansion West Texas Tornadoes, and run it the way it should be run. Of course, if he can't exactly set the game right, he will at least set it on its ear with the help of old teammates T.J. Lambert and Shake Tiller--and his father-in-law's fortune.

Between kick-off and pay dirt, Jenkins visits his usual haunts: saloons, locker rooms, bedrooms, front offices, and the field. With rambunctious good spirit, he steers us from the dust of Texas to the glitter of New York and Hollywood. Sure, it's a funny novel--rudeness and crudeness abound--but it's also a novel that insists on tackling the game's problems, piling onto human foibles, intercepting overbearing stupidity, blindsiding political correctness, splitting the uprights with the virtues of hard work and good friendship, and still leaving enough room to slip in advice for disarming airplane smoke detectors. From Jenkins, who would want to accept less? --Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
In this continuing saga of former sportswriter Jenkins's sardonic alter ego and narrator, Billy Clyde Puckett (Semi-Tough, etc.), the former footballer and gadabout sports junkie slips from redneck obstreperousness to fundamentally racist and misogynist stupidity. The plot of this very shaggy, junior-high-school dirty joke centers on Billy Clyde's attempt to use the money of his father-in-law, Big Ed Bookman, to establish an NFL expansion team in the semiarid Texas wasteland between Amarillo and Lubbock. This improbability is of small concern to the book and occupies less than a tenth of its length. Billy Clyde spends most of the time regaling the reader with the mind-numbing back stories of every character?no matter how minor?who crosses his path. Most all of these have three unlikely names or nicknames, none of which is believable or in good taste. Other diversions include a timeline tracing the history of the NFL, lots of babe-ogling in bars and arguments over the stats of yesteryear. Billy Clyde is too much a part of the absurdity to provide a satiric norm or to separate wisecracks from wisdom. In places, Jenkins gets off an amusing zinger or two, but far too much of this overdone but underachieving farce reminds one of a comedian who grows nastier the fewer laughs he gets. Author tour.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Anyone who has read Semi-Tough (LJ 10/15/72) will not be surprised that this book, which continues the adventures of Billy Clyde Puckett, is sexist, racist, redneck, antigay, politically incorrect, and guaranteed to offend virtually every category of human being. It is also rolling-on-the-floor funny. Billy Clyde and his rich father-in-law win one of the NFL expansion franchises, the West Texas Tornadoes, and extravagantly cheat their way to the Super Bowl. Along the way there is plenty of time for comments on Hollywood (Billy's wife is a movie star), corruption in college football (he's in favor of it), cheerleaders, lawyers, developers, and diners in small Texas towns. Public libraries should buy multiple copies; librarians should grab them first for a fun read.

I've read most of Jenkins books over the years and I've noticed an unfortunate trend - namely, as Jenkins gets older and more curmudgeonly, he feels the need to spend 400 pages proving he can be more of a neanderthal than virtually any other writer working today. I'm sure Dan and many of his more loyal fans would protest that "Rude Behavior" is merely Jenkins' expose on the excesses of political correctness (of which there are many, to be sure). But this book has a "slapped-together to meet a contractual obligation" feel to it. It' is neither the parody nor the satire as one has come to expect from Jenkins. Instead, it is merely a rant about everything in modern society that Dan disapproves of. Jenkins spends so much time trying to force lame jokes onto the page that he seems to have run out of time to include a plot or any sort of character development. And it still takes him 400 pages to take on all the "shirt-lifters," minorities, liberals and others who apparently pose such a threat to Dan's world. In the end there just isn't much "there" there. If you haven't read the earlier books in this series, I suspect you'd have no idea who the hell these characters are supposed to be other than stereotypes of West Texas bigots. Perhaps the time has come for Dan Jenkins to sit back with a young Scotch and a Marlboro and bask in the glow of his earlier, far more successful novels. To continue to cash in on the effort expended on his earlier, better books is simply an embarassment.

Rude Behavior- Yes it is!
By Jason Birkby
If you are not a Dan Jenkins fan or strongly oppose "Archie Bunker" bigotry, this novel may not be for you. Jenkins does however weave an interesting tale of the NFL. Far fetched at times very funny at others Jenkins will leave the reader and avid football fan scratching his head, wondering if this is how the NFL is run.
The novel is a bit lengthy and is slow at the beginning. However Jenkins mixes football (both fictional and historical) with hollywood, social issues and political correctivness. Bring back the cast from "Semi-Tough" was great for the reader, but might of lost the new reader.
The book is not quite as funny as "You Got To Play Hurt", which would be a better buy for the new Jenkins reader. However if you like Dan Jenkins, football and aren't easily offended this one is a must read.
