This book considers medieval texts that deal with ancient theater as documents of Latin Christianity's intellectual history. As an exercise in medieval historiography, this study also examines biases in modern scholarship that seek links between these texts and performance practices. The effort to bring these texts together and place them in their intellectual contexts reveals a much more nuanced and contested discourse on Greco-Roman theater and medieval theatrical practice than has been acknowledged. The book is arranged chronologically and shows the medieval foundations for the Early Modern integration of dramatic theory and theatrical performance.

The Idea of the Theater in Latin Christian Thought will be of interest to theater historians, intellectual historians, and those who work on points of contact between the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. The broad range of documents discussed (liturgical treatises, scholastic commentaries, philosophical tracts, and letters spanning many centuries) renders individual chapters useful to philosophers, aestheticians, and liturgists as well as to historians and historiographers. For theater historians, this study offers an alternative reading of familiar texts which may alter our understanding of the emergence of dramatic and theatrical traditions in the West. Because theater is rarely considered as a component of intellectual projects in the Middle Ages, this study opens a new topic in the writing of medieval intellectual history.

About the Author
GERARD THOMAS STRAUB is the author of the critically acclaimed The Sun and Moon Over Assisi: A Personal Encounter with Francis and Clare (St. Anthony Messenger Press), a book of reflections on the two saints of Assisi that earned the 2001 Catholic Press Association first place award for Spirituality—Hardcover books and was named one of Spirituality & Health magazine’s Best Spiritual Books of 2001. Mr. Straub is also the author of Dear Kate, a novel, and Salvation for Sale, a nonfictional look at the world of televangelism. Mr. Straub has had a long and distinguished career as a television producer and director. He produced, wrote and directed We Have a Table for Four Ready, a documentary film on the St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen in the slums of Philadelphia operated by Franciscan friars, and Room Enough for Joy, a documentary film that tells the story of L’Arche community in Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Straub also directed Glidepath to Recovery, a documentary film that showcases the work of a diocesan priest in Albany, New York, who works with drug addicts and ex-convicts. The three films have aired on many PBS stations. Mr. Straub has also produced numerous television shows for CBS, NBC and ABC, including the wildly popular soap opera General Hospital. Mr. Straub annually teaches a month-long course on film writing and directing at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Gerard Thomas Straub has given us all a gift in the work of his book, When Did I See You Hungry? Through my eyes as a volunteer missionary nurse to many third world countries, I can attest to the visions one sees in this marvelous book. The pictures themselves tell the stories. As you look into the eyes of our brothers and sisters you see Christ. Straub has depicted this sincerely and with compassion.
I have given this book as gifts to many friends and family members. Some are saddened by the pictures, others are curious. A few are speechless.
It is not until you reach out your hands and touch the lives of those around you will you know what it is like to ask, "When Did I See You Hungry?"

not much new

Although three years have past since the third edition when this edition came out. there is very little difference in the fourth edition. There is a new second author but the first 7 chapters are virtually identical.
The biggest change appears to be the expansion of Chapter 8 from 6 sections to 16 with p-values introduced and explained in various contexts and type I and type II errors introduced one chapter earlier. The introduction of hypothesis testing along with estimation occurs in Chapter 8. This may be helpful to instructors if they tend to strictly follow the order in the text. Chapter 9 is somewhat shorter. These two chapters are now organized by one and two sample problems rather than by estimation and testing. It is not clear to me that this is a better way to organize and introduce the material.

In the end, the text is only 15 pages longer than the third edition and there are no new chapters. There seem to be fewer exercises overall.

Although there are noticeable differences in Chapters 8 an 9, there is very little difference in the other chapters. Most of the exercises are the same (with a few deleted from the new edition).

The authors claim to put more emphasis on the use of computers to solve problems. But this is not easily discernable. I only noticed some brief mention of SPSS version 9 in the ANOVA chapter.

The book I wrote with Robert Friis was intended for the same audience of students and includes a larger assortment of techniques including an introduction to bootstrap methods.

Horrible at explaining concepts and formulas

As a statistics tutor, I have had to spend countless hours explaining to students the content of this book due to its lack of ability to make concepts clear. This book assumes that the reader has a background in statistics and does not need detailed explanations. I have had to use my personal statistics book (Elementary Statistics by Mario F. Triola) to properly teach the students statistics. This book is frustrating to say the least.

Fair overview, but not always clear.

The book is well organized from start to finish, and builds well on the topics as they are presented. Unfortunately, it often makes assumptions about the reader's knowledge of the topic, usually around formula usage that is confusing and difficult.
As a primer for statistics, this one falls a little short.

Another excellent read of Susan's

I especially enjoy Susan Wiggs and wish she would get on the writing track again, as I'm missing her new books. However, recently I have had to find her more obsure books.

Occasionally, there is a diamond in the rough.. Ok this is so this is not too rough .. it is a polished mystery romance and an excellent read with interesting characters and intrigue. Sorry I could not agree with the person that said it had too much mystery?? Hummm... I guess that what makes us all different. I think you would like it if you have enjoyed other somewhat complex novels of Susan's. I was surprised to find it and delighted to enjoy it so much! Good luck finding a copy.
