Great Lessons

A friend asked if I would give her young daughters (ages 5 and 9) vocal lessons. I am very musical but not trained in music education, so it was important to me to find a program that could walk me though teaching voice. This book was a great help! The lessons are fun and teach key components of singing such as correct posture, correct breathing, matching pitch, etc. It uses physical movements to help teach the concepts. The free downloadable CD tracks were also very helpful. I highly recommend this product.

a valuable resource for teaching very young children to sing!

As a voice teacher I can highly recommend this and the next book in the series. This resource is very valuable for little children( age 4 and up) who want to sing but have undeveloped ear. Exercises in this book are geared towards developing good breathing techniques, overall intonation, (matching tones sung by by teacher, exploring the range of the kids voices). Mister Blankenbehler, please, we need a book like these for the teens!

I am really enjoying the Little Singers Level A book. It serves as a coloring activity book for students to enjoy at home. The online recordings are also a useful tool in lessons. You can download them for free from the website, and put them on CD's for students to listen to and practice at home.

It's the hydronicians bible and should be the most-often-used, dog-eared book in your collection. A copy at home and in your truck is a must. In 1994, Dan wrote two papers bound together in this book
1) "Pumping Away," an easy to understand argument for placing the circulator pump on the outlet/top of the boiler (not the inlet/bottom)
2) "Other Really Cool Piping Options for hydronic systems" a list of set-ups for mixed systems (hot water, hot floor, radiant, baseboard)

Its a humorous and easy read, using examples like shaken pop bottles, and I read half of it last night.

The product is overpriced at $25 for 1994, and in a big font and widely spaced. This sort of content is usually a pdf report that is available free from energystar.gov or for $10 via download from a Professional Organization website.

If you've spent some time reading Dan's website/forum Homeheatinghelp.com, you already know most of this book's content. The book goes deeper into "the why" with easy explanations and humor.

I purchased this 1994 book, because modern books really focus on modern hydronics and I wanted something that omits that content. My 1960's boiler released water 3 years ago from the safety valve, and I freaked out like a normal person and called my hydronics contractor. They used it as an excellent opportunity to say "my boiler was worn out" (probably not) and sell me a new boiler. Except its a photocopy of the old one using the same 1960's technology and doesn't have modern efficiency & money saving technologies. It turns out both boilers are operating at nearly 27psi (safety@30) because there are 2 major kinks in my underground hydronic lines. And it constantly fires, because half my pipes run under my basement/underground and the other half run through a vented crawlspace where its 20F in the Winter. So i'll be doing some plumbing this summer (boiler off due to summer heat) to fix that.

Save your money and visit Dan's website instead at homeheatinghelp.com . Otherwise buy this book, and consider it a night at a fun, but slightly overpriced comedy club with a drink included.

Pumping Away has the simple answers!

This book concisely explains why you want to pump away from the boiler as well as why we have a legacy of doing it wrong. This isn't a maybe or perhaps. Installing hydronic circulators incorrectly leaves a legacy of gurgling pipes and an annual need to bleed hydronic heating systems that isn't necessary, thank you Dan Holohan! This book is a quick read and an excellent reference after read specifically the diagrams. This is my second copy, my first was lent out never to be seen again...

Excellent! Dan is the Man! This book is a must have if you're interested on boiler installs. Dan is very unique at explaining the do's and don'ts on boilers. Every service technician in the trade and person who needs help with boilers and I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

John K. Ousterhout is a professor of computer science at Stanford University and chairman of Electric Cloud, Inc. Ousterhout created Tcl and is well-known for his work in distributed operating systems, high-performance file systems, and user interfaces. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and recipient of the ACM Software System Award (for Tcl), he has served as professor of computer science at UC Berkeley, distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, and CEO of Scriptics, which he founded.

 

Ken Jones, president of Avia Training and Consulting, has spent thousands of hours teaching Tcl to IT professionals. He has more than twenty years of experience training developers through live courses and documentation. As lead instructor at Scriptics, he worked closely with John K. Ousterhout and many other key Tcl developers. Jones coauthored Practical Programming in Tcl and Tk, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2003).

Excellent How To Book (not best first Tcl book)

This is a super "How-To" book, but very different from the first edition. If you are looking to learn TclTk from scratch or want a great TclTk reference book, don't start here (read Brent Welch's book). If you have a fair or extensive Tcl background & want a nuts-n-bolts how-to book, this is it.
But why learn TclTk?
Tcl is the Zen of computer languages (easy to get started, impossible to totally master). The abstraction level is very much like the human mind (e.g. you can write apps that generate or modify their own code based on what's coming into the apps environment (via substitutions & eval, etc.) and because there is no compile cycle, you can write apps that can run for years and be updated (via source command) without ever shutting down.
Tcl can be embedded into or run on top of other languages or apps (saves a lot of programming time). One complaint I've heard about Tcl is it's slow for some purposes, but because Tcl is built on C there's always the option of using C code (or Java, whatever) where it's needed. Almost always there's a faster solution in Tcl when speed is an issue (e.g. lists (now also dicts) are fast, big arrays are slow).
Tk is the graphical side of the TclTk team and can be used with other languages as a graphics builder.
If you like rigid computer languages (PLC programming or BASIC) you may find the infinite "open-ended-ness" of Tcl a little scary. However, if you wanna' use a language that would be great for running a starship, give Tcl a try.

Missing material on new features

This book does a good job of explaining the fundamentals to Tcl, Tk, and the C API. However, after a decade between editions, it's missing too much material about more modern features. Specifically there is no information on the Threads package; for this you will instead need to refer to chapter 21 of Practical Programming in Tcl and Tk, 4th ed.

It uses simple scripts to introduce Tcl/Tk basics and provides a fine coverage of its commands, functions and more. All of its latest, newest improvements are revealed along with real-world run-time environments and applications. Very highly recommended for serious developer's libraries.

I first read this book when it was first written (early 70's) I had three copies all of which have been borrowed and not returned. Really good coverage but not quite mastery

Really, really good coverage of bash scripting core fundamentals. Literally one of the best I've read and I've read many of them. I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say complete as some of the other reviews have stated but it definitely does a really good job of getting you started down the road. The only issue I had in the end is the "mastering" part of the title. I don't think any book under 200 pages should claim to provide mastery of a topic, especially one as complex as bash shell scripting, but in the end I decided not to dock it a start because it does such a good job at what it does cover. My preference would be to drop the small sections on Perl and Python. They are topics worthy of their own treatment and the pages could have been put to better use going deeper on shell scripting.

Shell Scripting COMPLETE!

I was extremely skeptical at first glance; however after reading this book it truly covers each topic with enough detail to give a clear understanding of the tasks at hand. Doing a lot of automation work with frameworks like Puppet which can benefit from shell scripts, and all I can say is wow.. you really need to pickup a copy of this book as it is well worth the cost.

Well done

I've written two other reviews of games, and this is my third. I've (obviously) done three of these games, and this one wasn't the best. It was still exciting and fun to do, but the characters weren't as interesting as they were in the other books, and a lot of the clues were the same, meaning different people had the same clues in the same round. Still, it was hard to solve, and my friends and I still had a great time.

Lots of fun

This is the first murder mystery we played and we enjoyed it a lot. The game consists of 4 acts/rounds and took a total of 4 hours to play. The included components (invitations, blueprint, booklets, clues, summaries) are plentiful and of high quality. Some of us players acted, others overacted, and some just read out aloud what the booklet said- all styles worked fine.
The only complaint I have is that there are several subplots and decoys making it hard to focus on the actual murder. With every character having lots of clues to read/act out every round there is so much information coming in that even with the help of scratchpads it was difficult to keep track of it. Also the authors really like puns and the "punny" character names are a bit much. In the end everybody had ideas of how parts of the murder were committed but it basically came down to guessing whodunit.
