Growing up on a small farm in rural Alabama, B.B. Darnell had never traveled far from home. Entering the Army in 1942, World War II changed everything for the soft-spoken, humble young man. By the time the war was over, he had journeyed thousands of miles and had become a decorated combat veteran with the singular purpose of making it home to marry the woman he loved. "A HERO'S WALK" is the story of his journey.
Proceeds from this book will be used to benefit veterans through USA Cares, a non-profit organization that assists military families.

Lt. Darnell served in the 328th Field Artillery Battalion, 85th Infantry Division. In the fall of 1944, he was an artillery forward observer moving with the infantry in the Apennine Mountains of northern Italy during the bloody battle to break the Nazi’s Gothic Line. After a brutal series of assaults and counter-attacks, his commanding officer wrote the following:

“When Lt. Darnell was relieved and returned to the battery he was staggering from sheer fatigue and illness. He had been in the assault with the infantry for twenty-one days. Two different forward observer parties had been with him and were completely exhausted. He had always been with the spearhead of the attack, never faltering, never asking for relief and even refusing it when he was told to take it. Upon return to his organization he was placed under immediate medical care, but refused evacuation to a hospital, remaining with his battery which was moving in the attack in support of the infantry. Lt. Darnell’s devotion to duty, his extreme courage in the face of withering enemy fire, severe illness and extreme fatigue as well as his superior leadership at the most critical moments were an inspiration to his men and are in the finest tradition of the service.”

Two years earlier, B.B. Darnell had just turned 21 years old and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). Along with his degree in Agriculture, he received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
His overseas journey began on Christmas Eve, 1943, as the 328th loaded onto a ship in Hampton Roads, VA, bound for North Africa. They joined the war in Italy in March of 1944. From Naples to Trieste, Lt. Darnell slogged northward in that bloody conflict, enduring physical, emotional, and mental ordeals he never could have imagined.
The crucible of battle exposed the young man’s fear as well as his courage. It also strengthened his faith in God and galvanized his desire to marry the woman he loved. He finally returned home to Alabama in November, 1945, determined to build a life with his beloved Mildred.

B.B. Darnell’s story is similar to thousands of other young men in an era of heroes who came from the farms, small towns, and cities in the United States to confront evil in another part of the world. And when the enemy was defeated, the survivors returned home, forever changed.

A truly amazing story! I'm not a big military buff but I found this book to be interesting and addicitive. Portions of the proceeds go to a Veteran's charity - even better!

Riveting Read

For all of us who had fathers in military service, this book will open your eyes to the hardships and horrors faced during their service to America. These young boys went off to war and came back as strong men who went on to build this country into the best in the world. Mr. Darnell's narrative opened my eyes to the sacrifice military men and women give so we can live free.

Living and dying on the Italian front.

A rural Alabama boy's struggle to stay alive in war torn Italy comes to life in this well written memoir. Once D-day commenced the savage war in Italy was largely ignored by the press, but men were ingaged in mortal combat there, too.
This is one of those stories and it tells in graphic detail the horror of assaulting the well fortified German line time and time again. The casualties in Italy were just as staggering as those we were suffering in France, but got a fraction of the press.
This young mans journey will impress you. He lived for home and the girlfriend waiting for him, but two years of deadly combat awaited him. He did his duty superbly and unlike many of his comrades, lived to fulfill that dream.

The worst Book ever

I have read many books in my long, tedious life, and I must state this is possibly the most boring of them all. I am now a old man, coming up to my 86th birthday. I have read up on many interesting topics on twentieth century history, mostly on wars like the Boer war, WW1 and WW2 which I participated in. I decided several months ago to read up on the UN, well seeing as I am confined to a wheelchair there are not many other activities to do except reading or watching television. By a cruel twist of fate I ended up reading Norrie MacQueen's UN peacekeeping book. The English is abominable and the book does not sustain the reader's interest throughout any of the less than mediocre chapters. Also it doesn't contain enough imformation on the topic it is supposed to be informing on. Even for a primary school student to write a small project.

Dartmouth College is in the unique position of having a magnificent large fresco by the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco (1883–1949) adorning the campus library. Completed by the artist in 1934 and titled The Epic of American Civilization, this work was promptly condemned by many alumni as being too critical of the college and academia. In response to Orozco’s work, the illustrator and Dartmouth alumnus Walter Beach Humphrey (1892–1966) persuaded President Ernest Martin Hopkins to allow him to create another mural that would be more “Dartmouth” in character.

Humphrey painted his mural four years after the completion of Orozco’s frescoes on the walls of a faculty dining hall or “grill” at the college. Based on a drinking song by Richard Hovey, Dartmouth Class of 1885, it depicts a mythical founding of the college by Eleazar Wheelock. In the first panel, Wheelock, pulling along a five-hundred-gallon barrel of rum, is happily greeted by young American Indian men, whom he introduces to drunken revelry. The encounter, which takes place as the mural circles the grill room, also features many half-naked Indian women, one of whom reads Eleazer’s copy of Gradus ad Parnassum upside down. Fast-forward to the early 1970s and the introduction of the Native American Program and co-education at Dartmouth College: the “Hovey Murals,” as the work was known, became so controversial that they were covered over, and the room itself closed.
This book aims to provide not only the history (and art history) of this mural but also its wider cultural and historical contexts. The existence of both Orozco’s fresco and Humphrey’s mural on a college campus provides a unique juxtaposition of certain extremes of 1930s mural art. As such, their creation represents an important and fascinating historical moment while bringing into sharper focus some of the issues surrounding the politics of art and images. This book is intended as a textbook for those studying these murals and also as a guide to understanding how they fit into a troubling and difficult history of envisioning Native Americans by non-natives in American literature and popular art.

dieses Buch ist für mich eine herausragende Erzählung.Noch nie habe ich eine solche Geschichte gelesen,noch anderweitig solche starken Gefühle dazu gehabt.Für mich, kann ich Diese Kurzgeschichte über das zwiespältige Verhältnis siamesischer Zwillinge nur weiterempfehlen!Karin Slaughter hat damit ein unvergessliches Thema aufgegriffen,super!

Absolutely worth to read but it is not a typical Slaughter . Very different and there are dark nuances which left me uneasy . The book
