By tracing different approaches to understanding, commemorating, and narrating the events of 1903, he shows how in this small mountain town the "magic of nationalism" by which destiny is written into particular historical events has neither failed nor wholly succeeded. Stories of heroism, self-sacrifice, and unity still rub against tales of treachery, score settling, and disaster as people come to terms with the legacies of imperialism, socialism, and nationalism. The efforts of Krusevo's successive generations to transcend a past of intercommunal violence reveal how rival claims to knowledge and truth acquire vital significance during rapid social, economic, and political change.

Enigma trapped in a labyrinth.

I love puzzles. The study of western Europe makes sense because it follows a familiar path of progression. A group of people speak a similar language...say french, live in a common area and practice the Christian religion, therefore they form the nation state of France. The national compass of France leads straight to Paris with little deviation or interference. The Macedonian example is much more complex. It has been part of the Greek, Roman and Ottoman Empire. Perhaps its identity begins with the history of Serbia, Bulgaria, or Thrace?
This book will challenge the way the reader defines the key elements of advanced social theory. This book presents an amazingly complex puzzle ending in a specious present. The question of Macedonia if far from an answer, but this book will put the reader in a good place to understand how and why south-eastern Europe is the way it is.

captivatingly unique

I have just finished Betsy Love's Soulfire. What a remarkable read to be given a glimpse into what the personal lives and circumstances of the Book of Mormon women might have been like. Through her descriptive narrative and dialog of memorable characters it was easy to step back in time and get a sense of their loves, their trials and their hopes and dreams. Amazing inspirational story with a touch of romance!

This story kept me hanging on every word. I loved the main character, Zephenia, and loved being in her point of view. Betsy did a great job keeping readers interested and concerned about the fate of Zephenia and her family. The book was well-paced and had a great voice. It was interesting to see the facts I already know from the Book of Mormon intertwined with the fictional story of Zephenia and her family. It was also fun to learn more about the time period. Betsy did a great job staying in the very distant past with her character's thoughts, voice, and actions. I would highly recommend this book! It makes a great Sunday read and teaches a lot about faith I learned so much from the character of Zephenia and can't wait to find out what happens next!

Oh, and did you take a good look at that cover? Isn't it STUNNING?! I can't stop looking at it. Beautiful!

Hoping for a Sequel

I read this book from start to finish in about 4 days. It is exciting and engaging- so much that it kept me up till 3am to finish it! Now that I have finished it I still find myself thinking about the characters and wishing I could read more. I hope one day we get a sequel!
This book is great on it's own but it also adds to your Book of Mormon study for the story of Abinadi, King Noah, and Alma (Mosiah 11-18ish). I just happened to be reading in Mosiah as I started this book and it really helped bring the scriptures to life (although it's important to remember that Soulfire is FICTION).
I highly recommend this book to those who love to read for great entertainment and those looking to add an extra dimension to their scripture study.
