About the Author

Nancy Naternicola earned a BS in physical education teacher education and health at Florida Southern College, and an MS in physical education teacher education from West Virginia University (WVU). She is the fitness and wellness director of the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CPASS). Nancy develops fitness programming and teaches fitness classes for the WVU Lifetime Activities Program. She also oversees and teaches courses in the personal trainer minor and group fitness minor programs and teaches classes in the basic instruction program.

Naternicola manages the WVU Stansbury Fitness Center and supervises personal training and exercise physiology interns. She is a faculty member and master trainer for the American Council on Exercise. She has taught more than 15 types of group fitness, including step, kickboxing, fitness yoga, mat Pilates, sport conditioning, hip-hop, and boot camp.

Naternicola teaches for Fitness Pro Travel in Mexico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Curacao. She chairs the Wellness Task Force and is the CPASS employee wellness coordinator and an American Red Cross instructor. She is a member of the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WVAHPERD).

She enjoys all types of activities and sports and believes a body in motion stays in motion.

Fitness Steps to Success I love this book

Fitness Steps to Success

I love this book! I wish it had been available years ago when i began my own journey to fitness. If it had, I know I would have arrived much sooner to a better state of fitness. As it was, I wandered around in different programs that emphasized one or sometimes two main aspects of fitness and I never arrived at a feeling of completeness. Fitness Steps to Success offers clear concise directions for reaching results.

If you don’t use a trainer, this is a very good alternative! And if you do have a trainer this is like a collection of notes to be used when you are working on your own. This book contains all the foundational pieces that you would be paying a good trainer to teach you. Actually this book is complete enough to be used as a text book in a basic trainer’s instruction program.

For beginners the pictures and descriptions of exercises are excellent and include the essentials of posture and breath. For intermediate fitness fans these exercises include a progressive plan for a well balanced or well rounded approach which includes strength, balance, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning. Many people tend to focus on only one or two of these areas and come up lacking in complete health and reaching the fuller potentials that fitness has to offer at every level of being. And finally, for those advanced in all of these health arenas it opens up the next stage for completion of fitness: the teaching of others…….as one really “owns" a body of work when they teach it or share it with others.

I especially enjoyed the chapter on behavior change which describes the stages we all pass through whenever we attempt yet again to change an unhealthy behavior. Then simple strategies for changing behavior guide you from where you are to where you know you are a changed person.

The Right Steps

I was curious to see if I could gain insights and approaches to achieving the benefits of fitness. I was not disappointed with this product. One of the many weights on our healthcare system as most folks may be aware is the lack of attention to our own fitness and well being. Inevitably this leads to problems, many that could be prevented. This book is certainly a step in the right direction to help us. Not only is it comprehensive and wonderfully illustrated but it is easy to follow and well designed.

The book takes you through each phase of the fitness path in the following detail: Overview, Testing and Evaluation, Goals, Cardiorespiratory Exercise, Muscular Strength and Endurance, Flexibility, Balance, Core Strength and Endurance, Nutrition, and Behavior Change. Some of the weight training equipment might be out of the reach of some, by and large their are plenty of simple equipment set ups requiring just a bench, free weights, and dumbbells. This book is an excellent start for those who seriously want to take on the challenge of achieving fitness in their life and is well worth that effort.

Easy to read

Well written. Easy to read. Discover how to build a fitness plan specific to your own needs and desires. Some exercises require minimal equipment, such as a bench. But others require nothing. For example, the wall sit, an excellent exercise. Great color photos show you how to do each exercise. The instructions are clear, easy to grasp.

In preparation for a talk on social media to a niche group I belong too, I selected this book. I found one of the online videos in my research and really enjoyed the content of why social media is important, leading me to this book. I was hoping to gain some further intellectual insight from an expert on why social media is popular and successful ways of using it. I did not find it in this book. I don't doubt that Erik Qualman is one of the leading experts in social media. However, his writing style is unbearably unorganized (the section headings often never reflected the content below) and his examples are so unrealistic that I found the book a complete waste of time and money. The writing was filled with fluff, and I imagine you could condense the book of useful material into about 15-20 pages. I encourage anyone looking for tangible material to implement in daily life to avoid this book, and just rely on the YouTube video.

Severely Overrated

First, let me make it clear that I'm not an old grumpy throwback still trying to score deals in the classifieds section of my newspaper. I have an Internet history that dates back to the 80's and I design and engineer websites and I've done plenty of work on sites that either are social media sites or take advantage of social media sites. I have a very long view of social media and how far its come and how it has disappointed.

In the first paragraph of the introduction, Qualman writes "Just like social media itself, this book is written in sporadically digestible sound bites." This is all you need to know about this book. If you want a brainstorm of half-proven assertions that you can mine for ideas for your next marketing campaign, you'll probably find this book valuable. If you're looking to establish understanding and a long term outlook on social media, keep looking because another way that this book is like most social media is that it will have a short shelf life.

Socialnomics promises to reveal how social media transforms the way we live and do business, but it doesn't reveal or inform so much as it presents a lot of loose anecdotes about the power of social media and how it appears to be affecting the world. While he occasionally makes a passing mention of the downside of social media, his tone is too often an infomercial-like positivity about the sheer awesomeness of social media. A particularly cringe-worthy example is how he closes his introduction by claiming that social media will reduce redundancy and recapture billions of hours that can be redistributed toward the betterment of society.

This is a bridge too far and if you're going to make paradigm changing predictions like this, you'd better devote some serious grey matter into backing it up. Socialnomics doesn't. It's as if every argument in the book is allocated 140 characters of reasoning before we move on to the next topic.

Writing about disruptive technologies is a dangerous sport. Chances are that you'll be wrong about a lot of things, but the ones that have done it well like Howard Rheingold and Douglas Rushkoff were able to do it in a more profound way that caused you to evaluate how we interact with media and each other and their works continue to have value long after the judgement has come on whether they were right or wrong.

I get the feeling that Qualman can do better and in his next book he should write a book that can't be tweeted. It might have a longer shelf life.

On second thought, I'm changing from 4 to 3 stars...

Qualman does a very good job telling the reader why social media and social media marketing are not flash-in-the-pan fads that will be gone within a few years. Savvy marketers and brand builders must understand the new media environment in which they are operating and embrace it as the future. It is how things will be for a long time to come. Qualman helps you understand the environment and offers some insights on how others have leveraged social media to their perceived advantage.

The problems I have with this book stem from my perception that the author offers what seem like well pondered conclusions but reveals no data, no research and very little support evidence or hard quantitation so I was left to wonder if these "facts" are based on hard data or on the author's own biases and cheery assumptions.

He seems to talk about the 2008 U.S. presidential election a little too much throughout the book which is a bit annoying for business professionals looking for application and then late in the book Qualman delves into human resource management as related to social media and it just seems to go a bit overboard. Advice like, "[hire young talent and] simply get out of the way because the young talent may be vastly more talented in certain areas" may be accurate but it is so vague and general that it is worthless advice. One assumes he means that because young talent is much more in tune with social media that they will be able to perform better at job functions that have ties to social media, but again, no specifics, no details and no supporting evidence for this claim. It is at these moments in the book that it seems the author is a bit too much of a kool-aid drinking cheerleader simply repeating, "this changes everything." We've heard all the hype already. Now let's get down to specifics. His passion is clear but hard data is lacking.

That being said, the overriding message of this book is important for all business managers who need to understand how social media changes the game and why they cannot wait to embrace the future with social media touching just about every aspect of business and consumer behavior. Qualman makes the case as to why it isn't all going away anytime soon.

I recommend this book for those new to social media or those managers who still need to be convinced that it is the future direction of marketing. If you are already familiar with the space and are looking for advanced "how to" methods and detailed case studies then this is probably not the book for you.

Finally! Another VERY helful and applicable management book!

By dedicating 90% of his book to a so-called leadership fable, Patrick Lencioni very effectively conveys the very essence of the model he proposes in order to deal with dysfunctional teams. Though the story he presents is that of a hypothetical newly appointed CEO of a distressed start-up and (in the beginning of the story) her highly dysfunctional executive team, the model is perfectly applicable to any team throughout most organizations.
The model consists of a pyramid with the five dysfunctions of a team (from the bottom, up):
1) Absence of trust: stemming from an unwillingness in the team members to be vulnerable and genuinely open up with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
2) Fear of conflict: inability to engage in unfiltered, passionate (yet constructive, though it may strike you as odd) debate.
3) Lack of commitment: no buy in and commitment can be expected when ideas and opinions have not been aired and genuinely taken into consideration prior to a decision.
4) Avoidance of accountability: without commitment to a clearly defined set of goals, team members will hesitate to call their colleagues on their actions and behaviors that are counterproductive for the team.
5) Inattention to results: Lencioni brings it all home through the realization that avoidance of accountability leads to a state where team members tend to put their individual needs above the team's collective goals.
Throughout the last leg of his book, Lencioni contrasts how dysfunctional teams behave by comparing them to a cohesive team in the case of each of the five dysfunctions. He also provides suggestions on overcoming each of the dysfunctions and insights into the role of the leader in this process, all in a very structured and to-the-point way. Complementing this, he provides a Team Assessment tool to help determine where your team is at in terms of each of the five elements of the model.
As much as the book can be digested without too much trouble in 2-3 straight hours, it is inevitable (unless you are fooling yourself or you operate in a very healthy team) to have your managerial wheels in your mind turning at full speed by the time you are done with it. As a manager and an avid reader, I welcomed this book with open arms because I found it to be very useful and readily applicable. Now comes my challenge in putting it to use.

This book is helpful to anyone who serves on a team and specifically helpful for team leaders. You will see yourself and your team in this book. More than that, you will find specific steps you can take to make your team better. Through a real life fable, Pat leads you through the steps you need to take to move a team from dysfunction to health. You will find a clear model as well as examples that are as relevant as your last meeting.
As I read this book I discovered:
1. A vocabulary I can use with my team to discuss dysfunction.
2. A self-analysis that will get the discussion started.
3. A clear model for implementation.
As a team leader, this book challenged me to:
1) Lead selflessly
2) Take risks
3) Encourage conflict
4) Embrace the power of meetings
4) Direct my team around a common theme
This book is simple, practical and filled with wisdom. Highly recommended.

Good framework for ensuring you have a healthy work environment

I found this book to be Patrick's best - An easy read with a great structure for keeping your team healthy. Strongly recommended if your team has more then its fair share of politics. If you have this, start at the first dysfunction and work your way up!

Summary - A start up has just hired a new CEO, an older woman with operational experience in bricks-and-mortar companies where she had to deal with a dysfunctional team, including one especially venomous worker.

The framework of the 5 Dysfunctions:

* The first dysfunction is an Absence of Trust. This happens when team members are not open with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
* This sets the tone for the second dysfunction - The Fear of Conflict. Teams that lack trust are unable to engage in unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas. Instead they resort to veiled discussions and guarded comments.
* The lack of healthy conflict is a problem because leads to the third dysfunction - Lack of Commitment. Without having aired their opinions in the course of passionate and open debate, team members, rarely, if ever buy in and commit to decisions, though they may feign agreement during meetings.
* Because of this lack of commitment, team members develop the fourth dysfunction - Avoidance of Accountability. Without committing to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven people often hesitate to call their peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductive to the good of the team.
* Failure to hold one another accountable create an environment that leads to the fifth dysfunction - Inattention to Results, which can thrive where individuals put their needs (ego, career development, or recognition) above that of the team.

Some additional nice bits from the book:

* Trust lies at the heart of a functioning, cohesive team. Without it, teamwork is impossible.
* Trust is the confidence among team members that their peers intentions are good, and that there is no reason to be protective or careful around the group.
* Teams that lack trust spend inordinate amounts of time and energy managing their behavior and interactions within the group.
* Members of teams with an absence of trust: Conceal their weaknesses and mistakes from one another, Hesitate to ask for help or provide constructive feedback, Hesitate to offer help outside their own areas of responsibility, Jump to conclusions about the intentions and aptitudes of others, without trying to clarify them, Fail to recognize and tap into one another's skills and experiences, Waste time and energy managing their behaviors for effect, Hold grudges, and Dread meetings and spend time to avoid spending time together
* Vulnerability based trust cannot happen overnight. It requires shared experiences over time, multiple instances of follow-through and credibility, and an in-depth understanding of the unique attributes of team members.
* Leader must risk losing face and being vulnerable in front of the team so that the team can do likewise.
* It's ironic that so many people avoid conflict in the name of efficiency when healthy conflict saves so much time compared to back-channel attacks and maneuvering.
* Teams that fear conflict: Have boring meetings, Create environments where back-channel politics thrive, Ignore controversial topics that are critical to the team success, and Fail to tap into all the opinions and perspectives of team members
* Monuments of truth are best handled by face-to-face, not email.
* Big issue "a fractured team is like a fractured bone; fixing it is always painful and sometimes you have to re-break it to heal it fully. And the re-break always hurts more because it is intentional"
* "it is very possible that some of us here won't find the new company to be the kind of place where we want to be"
* 2 rules of a meeting: be present and participate.
* Questions to know people better: Hometown. Number of kids. Childhood hobbies. Biggest challenge in growing up, first job, etc.
* Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think.

* Listen, Assess, then DO!
* Disagree and Commit!
* Every great movie (meeting) has conflict.
* You will fight - about issues. But that is your job.

THE "BIBLE ANSWER MAN" CRITIQUES MODERN "SIGNS AND WONDERS"

Hendrik "Hank" Hanegraaff (born 1950) is the president of the Christian Research Institute (CRI), and hosts the "Bible Answer Man" radio talk-show, since the death of Walter Martin in 1989; Hanegraaff has written many other books, such as Christianity in Crisis, The Bible Answer Book, The Bible Answer Book, Volume 2, etc.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1997 book, "Thousands thronging into churches assume they are safe and secure... Prophets of the Counterfeit Revival claim that that entire Christian community is going to be polarized by a bloody civil war. On one side will be those who embrace new revelations. On the other will be those who obstinately cling to reason... Some of the most recognizable names in the Christian community are endorsing this paradigm shift with little or no reservation. The appeal is so staggering that churches on every continent are now inviting their people to 'experience' God in a brand-new way... Sardonic laughter, spasmodic jerks, signs and wonders, super apostles and prophets, and people being 'slain in the spirit' are pointed to as empirical evidence of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. The form and function of the church is being so radically rearranged that even the secular world has taken note... As secular television cameras demonstrate to a watching world, the essence of our faith is being systematically subverted... multitudes hail the changing face of Christianity as a mighty revival... what they are being told is a 'great awakening' is, in reality, a great apostasy. Genuine revival will not take place until the body of Christ undergoes genuine reformation."

He points out, "Leaders of the Counterfeit Revival appeal to Jonathan Edwards to validate their lying signs and wonders. Edwards, however, believed that the very kind of signs and wonders to which they appeal felled the First Great Awakening." (Pg. 14) Later, he adds, "The ministry of Jonathan Edwards was characterized by dynamic expositional preaching. The message of the Counterfeit Revival is characterized by delusional experiential pandering. While the Great Awakening was an era of exposition, the Counterfeit Revival is an era of esoteric experience... The very thing that Edwards wanted people to be saved FROM is what Counterfeit Revival leaders are inducing people to indulge IN." (Pg. 101)

He notes, "Unlike the leaders of today's Counterfeit Revival, [Assemblies of God leaders] were embarrassed by such outlandish claims and outrageous conduct. Thus, when [A.A.] Allen, who is extolled today by Benny Hinn as 'a great man of God,' was arrested for drunk driving during a Tennessee revival in 1955, the first of many alcohol-related experiences for Allen, the leadership of the Assemblies of God had reached its limit... [They] advised Allen to get out of public ministry... at the age of fifty-nine, he died in San Francisco from cirrhosis of the liver." (Pg. 133-134)

He wrote, "[Kathryn] Kuhlman's relationship with evangelist Burroughs A. Waltrip destroyed his family and devastated her followers. One new convert, for example, almost lost his faith when he 'got an eyeful' one night as he passed the church office and saw Kuhlman 'in the evangelist's arms.' Kuhlman candidly referred to her relationship with Waltrip as the 'greatest mistake she ever made.' She became utterly convinced that only a divorce would bring God's 'anointing and blessing' back to her ministry." (Pg. 169-170)

As with Hanegraaff's "Christianity in Crisis" book, this book is admittedly controversial; but Christians on all sides of the issue can benefit from reading Hanegraaff's documentation and exegesis---whether they necessarily agree with him, or not.

About the Author
Andrew W. Appel is the Eugene Higgins Professor and Chairman of the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University, New Jersey, where he has been on the faculty since 1986. His research is in software verification, computer security, programming languages and compilers, automated theorem proving, and technology policy. He is known for his work on Standard ML of New Jersey and on Foundational Proof-Carrying Code. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, recipient of the ACM SIGPLAN Distinguished Service Award, and has served as Editor in Chief of ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems. His previous books include Compiling with Continuations (1992), the Modern Compiler Implementation series (1998 and 2002) and Alan Turing's Systems of Logic (2012).

Looking for an intro to compilers? Buy this.

Appel's stated goal in writing this book was, rather than to provide a laundry list of compiler algorithms that could potentially be used to implement a compiler, to use the algorithms that now dominate modern compilers. His thorough and authoritative approach starts with building a complete working compiler in the first half of the book before exploring deeper specialized topics in the last half of the book. Each chapter comes with example ML code from the chapter along with programming exercises which build off of the chapter's code so that at the end you have built a working optimizing compiler.

The book is an enjoyable read the whole way through. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Instruction Selection, Register Allocation, Functional Languages, Loop Optimizations, and the Memory Hierarchy. This book gave me a new appreciation for how sophisticated a compiler's job is. If you're looking for an introduction or refresher on compilers, start with this book.

Good, but not an introduction to either compilers or ML

Appel explains the structure of a compiler in a very clear and precise fashion, including a lot of quite modern techniques. *However* it is only clear and precise if you have a rough high-level understanding of compilers and a good knowledge of ML beforehand. (If you understand one of the two, it is an excellent book for learning the other but you will need to do some thinking for yourself.)
If you're looking to learn about compilers from the very beginning, buy something else (I liked "Crafting A Compiler" as a starting point). If you're wanting to get a lot more precise about the way you build compilers, buy this book.

This book has a lot of valuable information with regard to the construction of a compiler, that fact is overshadowed by the amazingly poor editing.

This is supposedly the "first edition reprint with corrections", but it seems like the vast majority of errors are yet to be corrected.
