When Grace wakes up on the floor of her ranch house with a pounding headache to find her house has been robbed and ransacked, she knows she's in for a lecture from the Doc. Ever since her Pa died she's been living on her own trying to make ends meet.

Grace's Pa asked the Doc to look out for her before he passed, but the Doc's had enough of Grace's stubbornness. The robbery is the final straw and he tells Grace that he's arranged for her to marry the Sheriff Sam Spencer, so she'll have a proper man to watch over her.

But Grace has never liked Sam and tells him and the Doc as much, in no uncertain terms. When Sam rides after her into the night the two find themselves arguing on the dark dirt road just outside of town.

Cole and Austin, new to town and camping by the river, hear the argument and intervene. When the Sheriff decides he's had enough of Grace himself, she's left with the two strange men on the road. Enchanted by the beautiful curvy woman, the two men decide that night, that she'll be theirs.

Grace feels just as strongly about the two cowboys as they feel about her. She can't believe the strange tradition the men keep of marrying a single woman. But when they propose, she can't say no and the three soon find themselves as men and wife.

Only after the nuptials are over does Grace begin to understand what it means to be bride to the two handsome cowboys. Not only do they insist that she submit to the Doc for regular examinations, but they begin training her body to do things she'd never dreamed of and spanking her soundly if she doesn't obey.

Grace is ashamed at the ways she's displayed so publicly by the two men. Will she be able to put her pride aside and become the wife the two desire?

The story starts out well with good characters and background

The story starts out well with good characters and background; however, the story looses some focus by having characters involved in scenes without any explanation or reason for their involvement. For example, the sheriff is brought along with the doctor to the ranch to begin Grace's "training " but it is never discussed or addressed as to why the sheriff is involved in this experience. Additionally, while mentioned in the book's description, some of the humiliation scenes are extremely far fetched - parading Grace naked in front of the entire town. The bigger issue I have is that the story just ends in what feels like the middle of the story. Overall, the story is not worth the $4.99 asking price.

If your going to write a book about menage at least don't humiliate the women in such a way as to break her spirit completely. This was a horrible book.

I was really liking this story right up until the humiliation part. It took me by surprise (even though it was in the description) and was so unbelievable (to comedic levels). If you are into humiliation you will like all the ins and outs of this story but it straight turns me off. The writing itself was good though.

We sit inside of our bubbles and internalize the pain of everything that happens to us, but we don’t align with our struggles or successes. I am genuinely happy when I see people succeed at something they’ve worked for. I am able to share the joy as if it were my own accomplishment. I am able to feel the pain of a woman who doesn’t feel comfortable walking down the street at night alone. No, I have never been a woman, but I have listened to those stories and tried to put myself there. Let’s just be honest. This generation does not talk about sex, race, or pain from our childhood. We ignore those topics and we ignore self-love. I never heard the word self-love when I was growing up. As a child, I also didn’t hear the word love much. I went on several spiritual journeys in my early twenties to discover the deepest version of self. What I present to you here is a continuation of the journey. I am happy, I am healed, and I am as healthy as I can be. Today, I am sharing a spiritual, emotional, and health journey with you inside of these lines.

I get the Sarah Dessen hype

My first Sarah Dessen novel, so I finally get what everyone raves about. I can't even put it into words, there's just something smooth and unassuming about the writing. I was wary at first, b/c Auden is kind of a strange character who is a bit hard to relate to....wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get into it. And yet somehow I found myself up late into the night reading "just one more chapter".

It was the perfect summer coming-of-age tale. It had my required smidgeon of romance in it, but it was really just the story of how Auden grows over the course of one summer spent at her Dad's. Her parents just about put me through the roof....and yet I could see people who would behave that way. I wasn't sure I would get to a point where I forgave them their transgressions, but in the end they were just people, just flawed in a different way than I'm used to.

I loved the relationship Auden builds with the 3 girls. I love that as weird and, well, socially awkward as she was, they still sort of absorbed her into their group. I LOVED that Maggie was not all she seemed to be....I felt like there were so many lessons for girls in that one character -- there was a line that I probably should have highlighted, something about how girls can be girly and feminine, but that doesn't have to be all that they are....obviously said way better than that. *rolls eyes*

And needless to say, I LOVED the relationship that developed between Auden and Eli. I can't even put it into words. It was like two kindred souls finding each other, and learning about themselves in the meantime.

Looks like I'm going to take advantage of this sale and pick up a few more Sarah Dessen novels. I'd been in a funk in my reading, and her voice was just what I needed to suck me back in to this reading world I love so much.

Summer at the Beach Story

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen made my flight to a conference in New Hampshire fly by! The interesting characters drew me into the realistic story line. One of Dessen's strengths is her use of dialogue in conjunction with everyday activities. Whether on the phone, walking along the street, or hanging out at work, each conversation provides insights into the cast of characters.

Being an awkward nerd myself, I immediately empathizing with Auden. I even liked her name. Although the novel contained classic "coming of age" themes, there were enough unique aspects to hold my interest. I was particularly intrigued by the way Desson brought Auden and Eli together through their late night exploits.

The "it's never too late" theme is often applied in adult fiction with older characters, however Dessen did an effective job applying this concept to a teen character. From bowling to food fights, it was fun trying to anticipate what would be included on her list of activities.

Of course I have a few complaints. For instance, the book cover is attractive, but just plain incorrect. It shows an old bike rather than the types described in the book. Also, Auden would not be wearing that girlie pink dress.

Also, not being a coffee drinker myself, I found the ongoing references to coffee rather strange. I'm not sure if it's a regional or generational thing, however since all three of my grown children drink coffee I'm guessing it's another one of those things I missed out on as a teen.

When reading this type of "summer at the beach" story, it's fun to have a sappy, happy ending. I wasn't disappointed.

Along for the Ride has some of my favorite Dessen themes

There are several layers to this story, and I appreciated the depth in Along for the Ride that we don’t get in all of Sarah’s novels. Auden doesn’t sleep – hasn’t since before her parents divorced – and when she decides to spend the summer before college with her dad, his new wife, and their new born daughter, Auden meets fellow insomniac Eli. Along for the Ride has some of my favorite Dessen themes: female friendship, great tension between the MC and love interest, and a realistic protag. I remember relating to Auden when I was younger, because I was an insomniac and did everything I could to avoid sleeping. I loved, and still do, the idea of going on a mini-adventure every night while everyone else is sleeping. Like most of Sarah’s books, the family dynamic is tense in this one, but Auden’s parents felt so…self-absorbed and pretentious, it infuriated me to read. Ultimately this was a middle of the road Dessen novel for me: not the best, not the worst, but overall somewhat forgettable when lumped in with the rest.

The influx of Japanese art and fashion into the American cultural mainstream gets an entertaining treatment from Kelts, an essayist and lecturer at the University of Tokyo, who interviewed many of Japan's leading culture gurus over the past three years. Kelts is clearly most interested in the world of anime and manga (from Pokémon to Princess Mononoke), as his readers will most likely be. A primary theme is that of the Japanese paradox: how has such a strictly defined and rigid society produced pop art that is, compared to its American counterparts at least, wildly imaginative and boundary bursting? Kelts's belief is that one directly created the other, that anime and manga's wild and kinetic structures, hyperaddictive apocalyptic story lines and surprisingly emotional content (not to mention sex and violence unheard of in American pop culture) could never flourish in an openly permissive and individualistic society that had not experienced nuclear devastation. Although the book grasps too eagerly at its subject's grander implications, it still effectively conveys the cross-Pacific cultural dissonance. Kelts has a sharp grasp of his subject and is on sure ground when discussing the history of the form, especially the impact of Disney on postwar Japanese animators or the reverential awe in which American animators hold such filmmakers as Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away). superb discussion of Japan and the US, beyond anime and manga

As an American who is fascinated with Japan, but frustrated with books about the relationship between the two countries, I found Roland Kelts' "Japanamerica" to be a welcome breath of fresh air. Kelts focuses on the growing popularity of manga and anime among Americans, and the "mobius strip" of give and take between the two cultures, but his focus inevitably widens to address the broader mutual fascination between these two worlds. I love the fact that, as an American with a Japanese mother, Kelts avoids the two hazards of Japanophilia and Japanophobia. There is a refreshingly grounded and sensible middle ground in his analysis, a realism that seems to lighten things up and make it all more accessible and welcoming. Perhaps best of all - and this is a miracle in the world of cultural analysis - Kelts is delightfully unpretentious and his prose is as clear and comprehensible as it is filled with fascinating ideas and observations. Never for a moment do we doubt that Kelts knows what he's talking about it - and he brings it all across with infectious enthusiasm.

Good read, but has problems staying on target

The book is at its best when chronicling the history of the anime industry and the struggle of its major producers to develop a new, internationally-motivated business model without eroding their creative capital. It's worth reading for this reason alone.

It's at its worst when trying to explain the popularity of anime and the cultural confluences that have allowed it to rise into the American public eye, or the factors that might hamper it in the future. Here some of the connections the author attempts to draw fall flat. (Anime is more popular because of 9/11! Um, no.) Matters are not helped by the occasionally jarring non sequiturs he throws in. (For a book which looks down its nose at mindless cultural fetishism, 'Japanamerica' works hard to be one of the cool kids. What do Fox News and the burning of Dixie Chicks CDs have to do with the future of Japanese cultural exports? Realistically, nothing; they're mentioned only so that the author can demonstrate how cool he is by looking down his nose at them. One wonders what kind of America he grew up in such that those elements are representative.)

Overall, this is a worthy snapshot of the state of anime as a cultural phenomenon. I would give it four or even five stars if more of the book were given over to this. As it is, I'd say get the book but skip the preaching about how rape is no problem in Japan and Americans are either Japanophiles or record-burning, Puritan-descended rednecks. Also, take his praise for Bakshi's animated 'Lord of the Rings' with some salt.

gets his analysis spot on...for the most part

Although I nearly busted a gut when the author stated "Japan is one of the most efficient and industrious nations on Earth." Anyone who has worked in any J-company will know that's not true unless you consider a phalanx of people taking days on end to complete simple tasks most Westerners could do in well under a minute. The funny thing is throughout much of the rest of the book he refutes that but showing how Japanese anime makers have the worst business sense outside their own island nation bubble and how inefficient (and inept) their business models are.

The book though is on the whole a fantastically well-researched and his salient points are well taken. Being an editor for J-co's, I appreciated the dig at Japanese unable to grasp the idea that it might be worth their while to spend enough dough to get their Japlish proofread and cleaned up into readable English copy. Thanks for that, Roland.

Although the concentration of this book is on anime, it touches on everything from video games to cos play. Kelts also is able to bridge that gap in understanding that many Westerners who don't "get" J-pop culture on where the weirdness and dicotomy comes from and how it fits right in within J-culture without dire social consequences (i.e., Japan's urban centers are extremely safe yet a lot of manga contain far more graphic sexual and violent images than mainstream American audiences would be able to handle).
